Mario Gadda Personal Model (1983)

James Tubbs Violin Bow

James Tubbs (1835-1921, London): He finished his apprenticeship at his father William Tubbs's workshop. Between the years of 1860 and 1870 he worked for Hill & Sons. He became self- employed in London from approximately 1870 on. The bows from this period show a HILL- stamp. Subsequently, he added the initials "J." or "Jas" in order to demonstrate who in fact made the bows. Since one of his brothers (John) emigrated to the USA and also made and sold bows there, he decided to change the stamp to Jas around 1878. He built his bows following his own, very personal, model. His bows are of consistent high standard. After his father's death in 1894 he only built frogs without mother-of-pearl eyes. (neuetaxe.com)
